Postgraduate studies

The IACS department offers an innovative Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in the field of interdisciplinary Arts and Culture Studies which allows students a high degree of flexibility in the selection of courses offered by IACS, the Wits School of Arts, and in selected other departments in the University. Students are able to shape a curriculum that affords them the opportunity to explore a wide range of issues from historical, theoretical, and sociological perspectives. All courses require critical engagement and strong research and writing skills. Some Honours courses may incorporate practical projects, internships and/or fieldwork.

The department also offers the Masters by Research and PhD degrees.
Our MA by Research and PhD Degrees can be undertaken as either full research dissertation (research and writing-based) or include a written research-based component combined with a practical/creative project, depending on topic and supervisor availability.

Temara Prem is a doctoral student conducting research on Expressions of Cultural identity in South African Indian Filmmaking.

Nadia van der Walt is a doctoral student whose research is entitled (Re)Visioning Intimacies and Identities: A Comparative Analysis of Scopic Regimes, Multi-Layered Gaze Structures, and Representation Across Contemporary French and South African Coming-of-Age Films.

Daniel Maposa’s doctoral research investigates the Resilience of Theatre Organisations Operating in Unstable Environments: Selected Case Studies from Zimbabwe.

Lerato Tshabalala is a Master's student whose research is entitled Once Upon a Post: instagram as a Medium for Storytelling, Creative Expression and Interactivity.

Pumulo Ngoma has recently completed a Master’s degree titled Welcome Back to my Channel: Creative Digital Citizenship and Digital Labour in the Digital Economy Amongst South African Youtubers.

Samantha Schoeman is a Master’s student writing about Asian Representation in Science Fiction: The Cultural Instrumentality of Techno-Orientalism.

Theresa Blom is a Master’s student writing about Fanfiction in the English Department: An Intervention into Literary Studies Practices.

Raymond Witcher is a PhD Candidate working on his doctoral project on Comic Making in South Africa: Using Creative Practice to Explore the Development of a Vernacular Genre.
