Postgraduate Studies
Undergraduate studies At the undergraduate level, the department offers the interdisciplinary component FVPA (Film, Visual & Performing Arts) of an academic major which is open to all students in the Faculty of Humanities.

PhD Candidates

Temara Prem

Temara Prem is a doctoral student in the IACS department in the Wits School of Arts (WSOA) where she is conducting research on South African Indian cinema. 

She completed her undergraduate and Honours degrees at AFDA Durban, and obtained a Master of Fine Arts Degree at AFDA Cape Town, specialising in the discipline of Cinematography in Film Studies. 

Since 2013, through bursary awards and training programmes with the KZN Film Commission, Temara has gained valuable practical experience in the film, television, and media industries.

Temara is also an alumna of the National Film and Video Foundation's Female Filmmaker Programme in 2021, and has been involved in the production of documentaries, feature films, and short films in various roles, including cinematographer and director.

Lee-Ann De Vries

Lee-Ann De Vries is a PhD Candidate in the IACS department whose research emerges from her Masters research in the field of Popular Music Studies.

Her research interrogates the interrelationship between South African music and the US commercial music industry, and examines the Grammys as a site of cultural diplomacy and as a cultural intermediary.

She  is a tutor for first year students in  Film, Visual, and Performing Arts (FVPA1)  and has served as a co-supervisor for honours research in the department.

Lee-Ann provides administrative and teaching assistance, and co-organises the department’s annual research colloquium.
