Originally, Karate is a Japanese martial art, the word translating into empty hand in Japanese. Hence, our teaching incorporates demonstrating self-defense using the human body in the most scientific and effective way of generating power within a person.
It is the dojo kun (principles of karate) that govern the teaching and form the basis of the atmosphere within the dojo (place of teaching). Each karateka (karate student) is expected to uphold these principles and demonstrate them both on and off the floor. It is encouraged that karateka observe the dojo kun within their training, thus enhancing their skills and preventing unnecessary injuries.
The first being CHARACTER, encourages one to seek perfection of thereof - speaking to aspects of individuality and morality. The second being SINCERITY, promoting faithfulness - speaking to the aspect of loyalty and honesty. The third being EFFORT, reminds one to endeavor - speaking to aspects of focus and determination. The fourth being ETIQUETTE, emphasizes the respect of others - speaking to aspects of consideration and manners. The final being SELF CONTROL, warning against violent behavior and speaks to aspects of temper and maliciousness.
It is these principles that have founded the core values of friendship, perseverance and strength within Wits Karate and have allowed the establishment of our club for over 50 years.
Through systematic training, karate develops and strengthens mental and physical fitness; develops concentration and co-ordination; improves reflexes and strengthens the will and aim to build character. The club is affiliated with the South African Japanese Karate Association (SA JKA).
