Research area: My research focuses on the discovery and investigation of novel materials, including new superconductors, quantum materials, and applied materials, as well as novel ground states. I developed the “Novel Quantum & Applied Materials Laboratory,” the only laboratory in Africa where high-quality single crystals of quantum and applied materials can be developed and explored.

Research area: I am exploring the deepest mysteries of the universe through my work with CERN, where I primarily focus on experimental particle physics. I’ve been involved in investigating novel collider signatures in search of new phenomena, including the elusive dark matter.

Jennifer Fitchett

Research area: I’m working in the field of Biometeorology, exploring the impacts of climate change on plants, animals and people. My Sellschop project is exploring the applicability, suitability and validity of biometeorological indices for application in (southern) Africa.

Dept of Speech Pathology / Health Communication Research Unit, School of Human and Community Development, Faculty of Humanities

Research area: My research focuses on health communication using qualitative methods from the social sciences. I ask questions about how to support health professionals and patients in interacting and connecting more effectively, how to best help student clinicians develop their communication skills, and what are patients and health professionals’ experiences of care.

School of Electrical and Information Engineering, Faculty of Engineering 

Research area: I use my "nerdy engineer" skills to create innovative solutions that harness structured laser light and machine learning for long-range wireless optical communication. I work with low-cost, off-the-shelf components in ways that manufacturers typically don't intend. With my extensive interests, I have a vision of using my research to help bridge the digital divide.

Nosipho Moloto

School of Chemistry, Faculty of Science 

Research area: My group works on cutting-edge research in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Our objectives are to synthesize novel functional nanomaterials, understand their chemistry, and then apply them in areas such as water, energy, biomedical applications, and sensors.

School of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science

Research area: I am a landscape ecologist, urban ecologist and ornithologist. I am primarily interested in socio-ecological systems, and a big focus of our work in cities is on highlighting environmental injustice. I am obsessed with citizen science, and with my Sellschop award I ran the Jozi Bee Hotel Project.

Year Fellowship awarded: 2016

Economics, School of Economics and Finance, Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management

Research area: I am a development economist, specializing in the field of feminist economics. My research has covered the cross-cutting themes of gender, labor, inequality, households and child wellbeing. My project for the Sellschop award explored how factors in early childhood, particularly nutrition and the home environment, affect the cognitive and educational outcomes of South African children.
