A . Cultural Night: Celebrating African Diversity

Overview: Cultural Night is a cornerstone of the Pan African Universities Debating Championship, celebrating the rich cultural heritage across the continent. Each country’s delegation will showcase their unique traditions, which may include traditional clothing, music, dances, food, and storytelling .

  • Activities:Cultural Booths: Teams will set up booths representing their countries, offering participants the chance to taste traditional snacks, drinks, and view cultural artifacts or national symbols.
  • Performances: Delegates will present traditional songs, dances, or skits that reflect their national identity. This is typically one of the most anticipated parts of the event, where participants proudly share their cultural history through the arts.
  • Cultural Exchange: Beyond entertainment, Cultural Night serves as an important exchange of ideas and traditions, promoting mutual respect and understanding among participants from different African countries

Logistics: The event will be hosted at the University of Witwatersrand’s Linder Auditorium, decorated to highlight the diversity of African cultures. A team will manage lighting, sound systems, and stage setup to ensure smooth transitions between performances.

Excursion Day: Exploring Johannesburg

Overview: Excursion Day is dedicated to exploring the rich history and culture of Johannesburg, giving participants a break from the intense debating schedule. It allows them to bond with their peers while experiencing the local sights .

  • Activities: Soweto Township Tour: Participants will have the opportunity to visit Soweto, a vibrant township that holds deep significance in South African history, particularly in the fight against apartheid. Stops may include Nelson Mandela’s house and Hector Pieterson Museum
  • Gold Reef City: A theme park and historical site located on a former gold mine. Participants will experience the thrilling rides as well as a tour through the gold mining museum
  • Constitution Hill: A historical site that once housed a prison and now serves as a symbol of democracy in South Africa. It represents the country's journey from apartheid to democracy and is a key part of the tour).

Logistics: A fleet of buses will transport participants from the University of Witwatersrand to the various destinations around Johannesburg. The day will be well-coordinated, with meals provided as packed lunches.

Grand Finale Banquet: Formal Conclusion

Overview: The Grand Finale Banquet is a prestigious, formal event to celebrate the closing of PAUDC 2025. It is not only a celebration of the winners but also an opportunity to reflect on the tournament’s achievements and build lasting connections .

  • Activities: Award Presentations: Trophies and certificates will be awarded to the winning debate teams, best speakers, and top adjudicators. Special categories like the best public speaker or Masters Debate winner may also be recognized.
  • Formal Speeches: Distinguished guests, including university officials, key members of the organizing committee, and guest speakers from the African debating community, will give speeches.
  • Dinner and Entertainment: A formal black-tie dinner will be served, featuring local South African cuisine. Entertainment during the banquet may include live music, a DJ, or even performances from local artists .

Logistics: The banquet will take place at the Chris Seabrook Music Hall, alternatively the Wits Great Hall. The venue will be decorated in line with the prestigious nature of the event, and transportation will be arranged to ensure participants arrive promptly.
