Research

The School of Oral Health Sciences showcases a variety of research across the different specialties of dentistry. The School strives to perform high impact research that not only focusses on advancing the science of dentistry but aims to improve the quality of life of individuals and communities at large. The School offers research opportunities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and hosts a Research Day biannually to showcase the achievements of its members.

Research Areas

The School offers research opportunities in multiple disciplines:

  • Prosthodontics / Operative Dentistry / Endodontics
  • Oral Medicine / Periodontics
  • Orthodontics / Paediatric Dentistry
  • Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery
  • Oral Pathology
  • Oral Microbiology
  • Dental Materials

Undergraduate Research

Students, within the Bachelor of Dental Science curriculum, are required to submit a research protocol in the third year of study. The proposed research is then performed in the fourth year of study after which a research report is submitted to the Department of Community Dentistry. The students may choose any field of study within dentistry for this report.

Postgraduate Research

The School offers opportunities to postgraduate students across various platforms.

Students registered for the Master of Science in Dentistry (MScDent) and Master of Dentistry (MDent) courses are required to submit a research report as part of their programme. The field of study for this research is guided by the field chosen by the student. For example, students registered for an MScDent in Prosthodontics will perform their research in the area of prosthodontics subject to the availability of a supervisor at that time. The school endeavours to make every effort to support the student in finding a supervisor, both within the school and via collaboration with other schools or universities, both locally and internationally, where possible.

Students wishing to register for a Doctorate degree (PhD) are advised to contact the relevant department so that an appropriate supervisor may be allocated. Please contact Mrs Hazel Makhubele for further information.
