Aim of the degree
- This degree does not result in a speciality in orthodontics.
- It is aimed at post-graduate students who wish to improve their basic knowledge of orthodontics beyond that of undergraduate level.
- It equips them with skills to offer Preventive and Interceptive orthodontic treatment
- It also prepares candidates towards a career in academics.
- Students are also introduced into conducting research.

Orthodontics Module (ORTD7008A):
- This is a yearlong theoretical and practical module in Orthodontics. It will be covered through seminars (mainly on Preventive and Interceptive Orthodontics and are clinically oriented), Lecture presentations (UG), wire bending exercises, Case reports and 100 Clinical hours.
Research Report (OHSC7000A):
- A topic is allocated to a student and under guidance of the supervisor, a manuscript must be submitted with the dissertation. The student must publish in an SAPSE accredited journal.

Clinical Practice in Orthodontics: This is the main module for the course and is conducted throughout the four years of study (I – IV). It is comprised of the practical, clinical, and didactic components.
- Pre-clinical Practical component: Appliance and Wire bending exercises. The exercises must be accompanied by literature which include, Description, indications, wire type and size, how the appliance is activated etc. Include colour pictures of clinical cases.
- Pre-clinical Theoretical component: The objective of this component is to develop a strong foundation in the fundamental principles and biological basis of orthodontics using Proffit’s Contemporary Orthodontics / Graber textbooks. Some of the topics covered are Orthodontic Biomaterials, Orthodontic Biomechanics, Orthodontic Techniques and Appliances, Contemporary Orthodontic Literature Review – Review classical articles in areas of special orthodontic interest (presented in a journal club format), Orthognathic Surgery, Advanced Edgewise Mechanics. Orientation topics will be covered in the form of mini seminars which are presented by the student as part of knowledge build-ups needed to be able to select patients, examine and treatment plan cases.
- Clinical Practice: Management, under supervision, of a complete spectrum of normally occurring orthodontic problems (Dental – Angle Classes and Skeletal malocclusions – Skeletal CL II and III). This also includes - Orthodontic Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, Interdisciplinary Treatment Planning in Orthodontics (Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Orthognathic cases), Early Orthodontic Treatment, Adult Orthodontics.
Craniofacial Anomalies:
- The module deals with orthodontic management of cranio-facial anomalies (Syndromes with craniofacial manifestations) including the most common Orofacial clefting syndromes (Cleft lip and palate).
Development and Educational Psychology:
- This module will address the psychological aspects of orthodontic treatment:
Non- Compliance in orthodontics
Quality of Life and Orthodontic treatment
The psychological impact of orthognathic surgery
Practice Management:
- Intended to prepare the student to deal with the realities of managing an orthodontic practice.
- Documentation in orthodontics and its importance.
- Personnel management, recruitment, and employment legislation.
Research Report:
- A topic is allocated to a registrar and under guidance of the supervisor, a manuscript must be submitted with the dissertation. The student must publish in an SAPSE accredited journal.
