Fair Finance media briefing on a just transition
- Fair Finance Coalition Southern Africa
Civil society organisations urge the Presidential Climate Commission to enhance participation of affected communities in Just Energy Transition Investment Plan
On Wednesday, 1 March, the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) will host the Integrated Energy Transition Dialogue for civil society on the implementation of South Africa's Just Transition Energy Investment Plan (JET-IP). Civil society organisations organised under the Fair Finance Coalition of Southern Africa argue that South Africa’s JETP-IP can only deliver a just transition if all processes are informed by meaningful participation of affected communities. The Coalition stresses that justice for those most directly affected by a transition from coal - workers and communities - must underpin the investment plan and that transparency and accountability are crucial to realising just and equitable outcomes. Members of the coalition have previously raised concerns that a lack of transparency has made it challenging for civil society to engage and contribute to the JETP and JETP-IP and that this can eventually undermine the country’s JETP and just transition.
The Fair Finance Coalition invites members of the media to a press briefing to engage on civil society’s vision for the JET-IP to deliver real solutions to address the country’s energy, climate and socio-economic crises, and protect affected communities.
Speakers:
Leanne Govindsamy – Attorney, Centre for Environmental Rights talking to opportunities and challenges related to the JET-IP process from a civil society perspective.
Thabo Sibeko – Earth Life Africa, Johannesburg reflecting on the impacts of communities who are affected by poorly managed coal-fired power station projects.
Courtney Morgan – African Climate Reality Project speaking on the realisation of civil society endorsed principles for public finance.
