CALS comments on NEMA Financial Provisions

Our Environmental Justice team comments on proposed updates to financial provisions for rehabilitating environmental damage caused by mining
On 2 July, CALS' Environmental Justice Programme answered a call for public comment by Minister Nomvula Mokonyane on proposed amendments to the Financial Provisioning Regulations for the rehabilitation and remediation of environmental damage caused by the prospecting, exploration, mining or production operations. These amendments have been published in terms of the National Environmental Management Act. Our comments focus on the need for public participation in determining financial provisions, especially for mining affected communities who have historically been excluded from the sector and continue to bear the greatest burdens of mining. We also touch on the importance of transparency and the need to integrate environmental, social and economic aspects of planning for mine closures.
