Centenary gifts for a special birthday
-
Retired radiologist Professor Joshua Levy (BA 1942, MBBCh 1947) celebrated his 100th birthday on 1 November 2022.
Les Glassman (BSc 1979, BDS 1984), the University’s representative in Israel, presented Professor Levy with centenary gifts on the special day.
Prof Levy completed both a bachelor’s degree in the history of music and was in the same graduation year as the first female black woman doctor Dr Mary Malahlela (MBBCh 1947).
Prof Levy’s mother, Dr Amelia Hersch (BA 1926, BA Hons 1929, MA 1931) was one of the first students at Wits. She was a translator of Yiddish, Hebrew and German poetry and an editor of publications such as Common Sense and Jewish Affairs. In 1928 the South African Philosophical Society awarded her its prestigious South African prize. Her master’s thesis was titled “The harmonising of experience and the ethical end”.
