Several Witsies received NSTF-South32 Awards, known as the “Science Oscars” of South Africa, in June. They recognise scientists who have made an outstanding contribution to science, engineering, technology and innovation in South Africa.

Jules Constantinou (BSc 1985) has been elected President of the UK’s Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. The IFoA is a professional body for actuaries, with an international membership.
Africa People Mover founder and chief executive Tumisang Kgaboesele (BProc 1996, LLB 1998, HDip Company Law 1999, LLM 2001) told Independent Online about the growth of his bus company.
Brett Dawson (BCom 1988, BAcc 1989) has started a venture capital firm called Campan, supporting technology start-up businesses. He was previously CEO of Dimension Data.
Gary Swartz (BCom 1995, BAcc 1996, MCom 2005) and Naomi Swartz (BCom 1996, BAcc 1997, MCom 2005) featured in Accountancy SA’s June issue, talking about equipping chartered accountants for the new world of work.
The memoirs of the late Dr Cyril Toker (MBBCh 1952, MMed 1962) have been published in e-book format: The Final Diagnosis. A Surgical Pathologist Remembers. His objective was “to bring the fascination and mystery of surgical pathology to life through the medium of extraordinary cases that he dealt with during his professional career.”
South African National Roads Agency CEO Skhumbuzo Macozoma (BSc Eng 1997, MSc Eng 2007) told Civil Engineering magazine about his career and plans.
Another engineer, Nuno Gomes (MSc Eng 1992), made the news for the anniversary of his record-breaking dive.
The Wits Food Garden is looking deliciously green. Meanwhile, the South African Student Solidarity Foundation for Education (SASSFE) continues to support the Masidleni programme on campus. The scheme provides daily lunches, free of charge, to about 1000 students in need. SASSFE’s donation contributes just over 12% of Masidleni’s running costs. Alumni are invited to contribute via www.sassfe.org.za.
Seed Engine CEO Donna Rachelson (BA Social Work 1987, BA Hons SW 1988, MBA 1994) has been nominated as one of the top 50 South African business women to watch by Entrepreneur Magazine.
