Entertainment junkies just love this Boykie

Jared Orlin is the editor of popular online entertainment site www.gossipguy.co.za and former entertainment editor of You Magazine. He was at the opening of the 100th Virgin Active at Balfour Park today and MyShtetl caught up with him there.

Orlin was at the function because he is a brand ambassador for the Virgin Active group. Originally from Port Elizabeth he attended Theodor Herzl primary school before he moved with his family to Oaklands, Johannesburg. He eventually matriculated at Crawford College.

He started his site in late 2009 and it deals exclusively with matters relating to entertainment. It carries a unique mix of local and international content. Orlin believes a lot of people come across GossipGuy because of the pictures on the site.

Orlin also works as a private PR agent, mostly for 5FM. He stills writes for You magazine from time to time and recently published a review of Terry Prachett’s latest book.

He initially wrote primarily about esoteric issues, self-help and spirituality. All topics which he felt weren’t being sufficiently covered. Orlin appears frequently as a guest on the E-TV morning programme Sunrise where he talks about the latest news in the entertainment world.

Orlin holds a BA from Wits in English and Social Anthropology. He has some important advice for young people looking to make it in the media and public relations world: “It is incredibly important for young people to network and intern as soon as they can. You also have to try to get yourself published.” said Orlin.

Concerning his website and its name he wanted to dispel the myth that all gossip is negative. He attempts not to be unnecessarily mean – even concerning celebrities, as they are people at the end of the day, he says.

“I believe in Karma and if you set out to disparage another person it will come back to bite you,” he said. “Don’t take yourself too seriously and have a laugh.”

Jared also previously hosted a show on ChaiFM which was called “The A-List with Jared Orlin” which basically dealt with who in the entertainment world had a good week and who had a week they would want to forget.

This young Jewish media personality has made impressive strides to date and if you are one of those entertainment junkies, his site www.gossipguy.co.za is for you.
