Dr. Jonathan MacClements was awarded the Exemplary Teaching Award from the Texas Academy of Family Physicians during its 2011 Annual Session and Scientific Assembly on Saturday in Dallas.

The award honors individuals with outstanding teaching skills, and those who have developed and implemented innovative teaching models.

MacClements is a family medicine professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler. He is also director of medical education and the Family Medicine Residency Program and chairman of the academic medical center's Department of Family Medicine.

He is certified in adolescent medicine and tropical medicine, and serves as a senior federal aviation medical examiner, the Smith County Health Authority and a lieutenant colonel in the Texas State Guard.

Known for his motto, "Don't tell me how to make it easier, tell me how to make it better," MacClements is regarded by colleagues, residents and patients as a compassionate teacher, caring physician, tireless community servant and avid scholar.

"Dr. MacClements is a fantastic physician, excellent leader, outstanding teacher, and good friend," said Dr. Kirk Calhoun, president of UT Health Science Center at Tyler. "He has trained high-quality physicians for our region and all of Texas, and he lives the mission, vision, and values of our Health Science Center. UTHSCT is very proud of Jonathan, and his award is well-deserved."

MacClements received his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He received additional training in general and ear, nose, and throat surgery at the University of Pretoria. He completed a family medicine residency at UTHSCT.

"I am extremely humbled by this award from the TAFP and even more grateful to my residents for this recognition. I am blessed to work with some wonderful colleagues and enthusiastic learners," MacClements said in a news release. "There is no greater joy than seeing that moment of recognition in the eyes of students when they grasp a new concept. It is truly a tremendous privilege to be involved in the training of the next generation of physicians."
