Erasmus, this special issue seeks to uncover, unpack and deepen investigations into present and future hauntings of Johannesburg, it’s specters, toxic legacies, its facades, and the residues of its disturbed surfaces.
This special issue includes the following:
- Counterspace with Sarah de Villiers and Sumayya Vally, where science fiction meets the built environment in down-town Johannesburg.
- Prof. Brett Pyper, Head of the Wits School of Arts on Jazz histories in Johannesburg.
- Nkgopoleng Moloi on navigating the inner city through patriarchy, misogyny and questions of safety.
- Brigitta Stone-Johnson, in a deep dive into 'Lithic Encounters' on the Witwatersrand ridge.
- Nina Barnett and Jeremy Bolen, on pervasive dust and radio activity and how it enters our lives.
- Dorothee Kreutzfeldt, on the fire and subsequent demolition of the Bank of Lisbon building in downtown Johannesburg.
- Riley Grant and William Shoki, on what is means to be "the children of Marx and Zoom".
