Mining archives @ Wits
Two major mining related archives have been added to our archival holdings, being the Barlow World Rand Mines Archive and the archive of the Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Co.
Barlow World Rand Mines archive
In 2019 Barlow World moved its new HQ to Sandton, and the University had to make a space available for the accommodation of the archive. The basement of the Education Library was identified as its new home, and was refurbished with generous funding from Barlow World. The new archive is now fully functioning and accessible for research.
The archive consists of various parts, or separate collections, each of which have their own listing and inventories. Please use this LINK to the extensive listing and descriptions of the Barlow World Rand Mines archive.
Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Co. archive
The Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company Ltd (JCI) archive was acquired by Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) in 2011, after which it was stored in containers at Crown Mines for the following 10 years. It was subsequently donated to Wits University in 2021 with the aim, to make this rich archive available for research.
The JCI archive is also situated in the basement of the Education Library, after further refurbishments of its space, including a spacious reading and meeting area, all of which was carried out with generous funding from Anglo American Platinum. Please us this LINK to the full inventory of the JCI archive.
