Prof Coleen Vogel together with other top transdisciplinary experts recently met with 35 talented young academics (no more than 10 years post PhD experience) from 15 African countries in Nairobi, Kenya for a transdiciplinary research proposal writing workshop.
The training was aimed at providing guidance on how to adequately write research proposals that have a transdisciplinary angle to it. The thematic research areas include:
- Global environmental change
- Disaster risk reduction
- Urban health and human wellbeing
- Sustainable energy
The training was part of the “Leading Integrated Research for Agenda 2030 in Africa” (LIRA) programme that seeks to develop early career scientists in Africa particularly those focusing on inter- and transdisciplinary research. The programme is run by the International Council for Science together with the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC).
The programme seeks to:
- Foster African scientific leadership for the implementation of the global agenda on sustainability
- Foster research collaboration within Africa
- Mobilise institutional and financial support for integrated research in Africa
The workshop was a great success and the participants have formed an African network where they can share and engage with each other on critical issues affecting Africa.
