GCI celebrates Mandela Day
GCI-tes celebrated Mandela Day by doing a collection for the toiletry drive. GCI would like to acknowledge all departments who supported us at the drive namely the Wits School of Governance, Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO), Wits University Press and the Research Office. It was a fantastic combined effort and we could not have done it without them.
Lenn Smith
Team GCI showed up a good attitude and a determination to compete in the Annual Lenn Smith Race. Paul Mvulane (MSc student) deserves a hearty congratulations for finishing the 4km walk/run with a time of 24 minutes, 10 seconds. Other GCI participants included Barbie Pickering (Finance Administrator), Jessika Samuels (Operations Manager), Naveen Shahi (Postdoctoral Researcher), Tashne Singh (Communications) and Oline Mokwele (Intern). Well done Team GCI!
Wits Wellness Day
This year GCI-tes participated in the Wits Wellness Day by forming a netball team to play against the School of Public Health.
Participants Hugo De Lemos, Barbie Pickering, Oline Mokwele, Dyani Jeram, Paul Mvulane, Jessika Samuels and Naveen Shahi represented GCI well. Fortunately there was no blood. There was however a lot of sweat. Thankfully there were no tears. GCI cheerleader Ruwa Matsika lent her voice to cheer on the team.
Fun was had all round and it was a great opportunity for GCI-tes to interact with fellow Witsies. While GCI lost the match, the Team is looking forward to winning the war and hopes to challenge the School of Public Health to a rematch in the future. Team GCI will be training hard in anticipation of future victory!
Skukuza Science Leadership Initiative (SSLI) Launch
Prof Barend Erasmus with Prof William Bond from SAEON at the launch of the Skukuza Science Leadership Initiative at Skukuza. The Nsasani Trust in partnership with OTS and SANParks constitutes the Skukuza Science Leadership Initiative (SSLI). The SSLI delivers a service in support of the Human Capital Development Strategy for the Environmental Sector (DEA) and more specifically, the Biodiversity Sector (Green Matter and the Lewis Foundation). The SSLI captures an opportunity to use one of South Africa’s greatest natural assets, the KNP, as a classroom allowing for experiential learning that links biodiversity management, higher education institutions and local communities.
