The Wits School of Education (WSoE) Writing Centre has become a specialised centre for student support in academic writing, in the field of Education. Senior students have been trained as mentors to work with undergraduate and postgraduate students to develop their academic writing confidence and proficiency. Students have access to a variety of writing centre activities:
- They can make appointments with a consultant at the centre. The WSoEWC is open every afternoon from 1pm -5pm during work days.
- They can attend discipline based workshops which are pre-arranged between consultants and the course lecturers.
- They can attend generic workshops on plagiarism and essay exam writing skills.
- They can attend creative writing events which showcase students and lecturers’ creative writing in the School of Education.
Because of the smaller size of the WSoE campus, we have expanded on our individual and group consultations by running a number of workshops on academic writing for undergraduate and postgraduate students. These workshops have given students new strategies for tackling assignments and extended writing tasks, materials and models for effective writing, individualised attention regarding their own writing issues, and reading skills to enable accurate assignment engagement.
If you would like to make an appointment with a skilled writing consultant, please visit the centre which is open from 1pm-5pm from Monday to Friday. If you are a postgraduate student, you will be matched with a postgraduate writing consultant.
