Academic Development Unit

The Academic Development Unit (ADU) is a component within the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment (EBE) tasked with three main mandates

Contribute to improved faculty through-put,
Coordinate and oversee the Engineering common first year (CFY) programme, and
Provide student and staff support at all strata’s [Academic (student & staff), Eco-social support and Psycho-social support].

We like to think of the ADU as a home for all the students in the faculty, a safe space to be heard, and a solid foundation for achieving academic potential in a holistic (all rounded) way. This philosophy enables the ADU to impact over a thousand engineering and built environment undergraduate and postgraduate students every year.

The ADU is centrally focused on improving the students holistic learning experience with the aim of increased faculty through-put, and this is achieved through the below:

Contributions to faculty teaching & learning,
Coordination of the Engineering common first year (CFY) programmes
Collaboration with Wits Plus
Design, and running of several data-informed student interventions [from student support tutorials, mid-semester school camps, use of learning technology to one-on-one & group workshops/webinars (on time management, study skills, transition to university, coping with anxiety, etc.) and access to our in-house Psychologist], and
Design, and running of several staff support programs, with the current focus being online pedagogy.

At the ADU, our motto is We are … so that You can…, meaning we are here so that you (students) can be the best version of yourselves in your Academic Journey at Wits Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment.
