Electrical Engineering

The Postgraduate Diploma in Electrical Engineering offers entry into the Masters programmes of the School of Electrical and Information Engineering and is primarily intended for those who do not already have a four year BSc in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).

Overview

Our applicants are typically those with a Bachelor of Technology (B-TECH) or a Bachelor of Science in an Engineering related discipline.

It may also include those who might not meet the formal entry requirements but have many years of industrial experience (Differently Qualified). Depending on the applicant’s previous qualifications, applicants may be required to undertake an assessment as part of the application process to determine their foundational knowledge.

Curriculum

The Postgraduate Diploma is offered at the same level as the fourth year of the BSc in Electrical Engineering, and many of the courses are run together with these fourth year courses.

  • NQF Level of the qualification: 8
  • Total number of credits for qualification: 120 Credits
  • Number of courses required: six 20 Credit courses at NQF level 8

It is possible to select two of the courses from other Schools (eg School of Mechanical Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering) if that School agrees and it works in the timetable.

The Diploma can be completed in one year full-time or two years part-time. For part-time study normally three courses are selected, but no more than five.

For this Diploma, no more than three courses may be repeated (no more than 60 credits can be obtained from repeating courses - this means you may not fail more than three 20 credit courses).

Please also note that 50% of the curriculum must be taken from the School you are registered with.
