Research Grants
The Centre announces their open and upcoming Research Grant Funding Calls on this webpage. Conditions of the grants are outlined below and/or in the attached application e-forms and the required supporting documentation.
The Call for 2025 Ad-Hoc Research Grants and Events is now open.
Important notes:
Grants are valid for events and projects undertaken from 1 April to 31 December 2025.
Call opens: 12 March 2025
Call closes: 28 March 2025
Applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application by 12 May 2025.
Applicants must be employed full-time at any of the Centre’s Nodes, but priority will be given to Historically Advantaged Institutions (HDIs).
We will acknowledge receipt of all applications – please contact us if you have not received acknowledgement within three days of submitting your application.
Outputs for events and projects (to academic and public audiences) must be clearly defined.
Projects that include community engagement, science communication and research impact activities will be looked upon favourably.
Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis and are subject to budget availability and successful review.
The Centre does not fund the following:
- Article processing charges (APCs) – please follow your Institution’s processes for details
- Scholarships – please apply for funding via the NRF scholarships route
- Per diem stipends – please contact the relevant host entity/institution to cover these
- Outgoing international travel is only funded under EXCEPTIONAL circumstances
- Funding for equipment will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Laptops and notebooks are not funded.
Event Grants
- Max R50k/grant – e.g. hosting of conferences, training workshops, research retreats, capacity development, local/regional/global competitions, or for school/community interventions, etc.
- Valid for projects undertaken from 1 April - 31 December 2025.
- Applications must address at least one (or more) of the Centre’s KPAs, namely: Research, Training, Information Brokerage, Service Rendering, Networking.
- Beneficiaries of these funds must be clearly defined (including keynote speakers, delegates, staff, etc.).
- Applications must be led by Principal Applicants employed full-time at one of the Centre’s Nodes and fall within one (or more) of the Centre’s 12 Focus Areas.

Project Grants
- Max R50k/grant – academic research projects (e.g. project running costs, additional project staffing capacity such as research assistants; excludes existing staff salaries / postdoctoral fellowship awards).
- Valid for projects undertaken from 1 April - 31 December 2025.
- Applications must be led by Principal Investigators employed full-time at one of the Centre’s Nodes and fall within one (or more) of the Centre’s 12 Focus Areas.
