History of the Department

Brief History of the Department:

The University of the Witwatersrand opened its doors in 1917.

In 1922  ENT services  were provided at the Johannesburg Hospital.

In 1975 Prof Donovan Haynes was appointed the first Professor of ENT. He stepped down in 1984 and Prof WM Macintosh assumed the first full time post.

He continued to serve in this position for 20 years and saw the department grow in numbers.

Prof Macintosh stepped down in 2004 and was succeeded by Prof PC Modi.

Prof Modi ushered in a new age which saw more integration of the three teaching hospitals.

After Prof Modi retired in 2016 , DR SD Masege took over the helms of the department.

Currently Dr Shivesh Maharaj is the Academic Head of Department, and he is supported by the Heads of Unit:

Dr Rasvi Ahmed at Chris Hani Baragwanth Hospital,

Dr Shahpar Motakef at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital,

Dr MJ Nkongolo at Helen Joseph Hospital
