Postgraduate Teaching

Postgraduate training occurs over a period of four years. Registrars work in all five hospitals, with the majority of time spent at St John Eye Hospital. They rotate sequentially through subspecialist clinics, where they receive individualized teaching and exposure to specialised surgical procedures. Registrars complete a Master of Medicine that runs concurrently during the four years, which is supervised and guided by departmental consultants.
The department provides an environment that is rich in teaching, that includes:

  • Journal clubs
  • Focused case presentations
  • Grand rounds
  • Tutorials for each subspecialist field
  • Fluorescein angiogram and OCT tutorials
  • Pathology and optics tutorials
  • e-Learning platform
  • Research methodology course
  • Research day
  • Interdepartmental collaborations
  • Continuous assessment programme
    • Formal annual training assessment
    • Exam preparation readiness
    • Surgical skills
    • Master of medicine
  • Mock exam cases

Training posts are advertised in the “Sunday Times” newspaper as they become available. In addition to the application guidelines that are described in the advertisements, CV’s can be emailed to the departmental secretary.
