Anaesthesiology

The Department of Anaesthesiology at the University of the Witwatersrand is the largest department of anaesthesia in the country, spread over 7 sites with 4 main sites and 3 satellite sites. The department offers outreach support to several hospitals.

Staff establishment with description of functional categories

Our department has a total staff complement of 223 with 114 HPCSA training numbers. There are only 107 funded registrar posts, which are currently filled. We have 9 supernumerary registrar posts, 3 of which are filled. We have a major crisis with processing of documents for the supernumerary registrars who are of very high quality.

There are approximately 80 specialists across the platform. The department host 12 senior medical officers who function as consultants across the sites, and 21 medical officers. Posts are constantly being filled as medical officers move into registrar posts.

The executive committee is composed of the Academic Head, who also serves as a head of clinical unit at CMJAH, 2 chief specialists and 10 other heads of clinical units.
