Inclusivity

This is the idea of letting people in and making them feel welcome in an aura or environment. It is where everybody feels equal, supported and able to access the means to make decisions and participate. Whilst inclusiveness implies acceptance by others, it is equally important to consider our own level of awareness, openness, and information on various issues. The more we work on ourselves, the easier we become naturally inclusive and sensitive to others. Becoming and remaining inclusive is a process, not an objective to be achieved. If Diversity is a fact, Inclusion is an action.

Ways to be inclusive in your everyday life:

  • Listen more - Listening is important. Do not interrupt. Don’t over-talk. Respect the time of the person in front of you, be attentive and sensitive to what the other person may be wanting to communicate.
  • Talk carefully - Watch the language you use. Language that might feel, sexist, racist, disempowering or heteronormative, etc. could be offensive, and if it feels that way, attempt to change the selection of words.
  • Value other opinions - Do not dismiss or disrespect other people’s contributions. Even when we don’t see eye to eye, we can still be respectful. Try and understand what they are saying and be open to new ideas and different viewpoints, even if you hold an opposing view.
  • Challenge stereotypes - Unconscious biases, prejudices, lack of information, and influence from the media or cultural and social beliefs may all impact the way that we interact with others. Be present, don’t let your judgmental instinct or presumptions influence the interactions.
  • Avoid assumptions - Although assumptions are often developed unconsciously, it is important to recognize when we apply them in our interactions with others and to purposefully change the assumptions that we hold on to.
  • Be aware of privileges - Considering “privilege” can be difficult and often uncomfortable. However, being aware of our own privilege is a crucial first step to adapting a more inclusive attitude.
  • Stay open minded, curious and do not fear mistakes - Always look for opportunities to learn and appropriately challenge beliefs, culture, social practices and personal patterns. Broaden the spectrum of knowledge and awareness of both ourselves and those around us by taking time to have conversation and listening to different perspectives.
