Generosity

Generosity is the quality of being kind and understanding; it is the willingness to give items of value to others and is often defined as an act of selflessness. It implies being able to look past one’s own need at who else is in the world and what do they require. It further implies connecting and relationship building; no matter how small or insignificant the act may seem.

Practicing generosity may enhance one’s own mental health and could be a valuable key to a happy and healthy life. It helps us understand our own sense of value and the contribution we can make to a world in which we all play a part.

Steps to Practicing Generosity

  • Show appreciation.

Generosity is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Each day life presents us with hundreds of opportunities to be generous. Take time to acknowledge people around you; stop, listen, do. Make a lifestyle out of being generous, to be empathic, to be curious as to how it may feel to be in the position of someone less fortunate and challenge yourself to do one good deed, every day, this can make the world a better place!

  • Accept appreciation.

Generosity is a two-way street, allowing someone to express their gratitude is just as important. It makes them feel equally good. It strengthens bonds and builds closer relationships. Whilst, accepting the generosity of others may make you uncomfortable, learn how to show your appreciation for the generosity that is directed toward you, and let the person know what their generosity means to you.

  • Give something special

Generosity does not imply giving something expensive or extravagant. Sometimes just being present and available is the greatest gift you could possibly give. It doesn’t have to cost a lot or be totally out of the ordinary, just a simple thoughtful gesture can make such a dramatic impact.
