Why get tested for HIV/AIDS

Deciding to be tested for HIV/AIDS can be difficult, however the advantages often outweigh the disadvantages. Deciding not to test for HIV does not mean you are not infected.

If you are HIV positive and do not know it, you are still living with HIV and AIDS!

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED TO BE TESTED?

Everybody is at risk of becoming infected with HIV. Answer the following questions to see if you are at risk:

  • Are you, or have ever been, sexually active?
  • Have you ever had anal sex?
  • Have you ever woken up confused not being able to remember the events of the previous few hours?
  • Have you ever used an injection needle that somebody else had already used?
  • Have you ever had unprotected sex?
  • Have you recently been exposed to blood or body fluids through your work ( i.e health science student)?
  • Have you ever had to care for a sick relative or friend where you might have been exposed to blood or body fluid?
  • Have you ever been in an accident or helped in an accident scene where there was a lot of blood?
  • Have you had piercings or tattoos where you were not entirely sure about the cleanliness of the equipment used?

If you have answered YES to any of these questions you could be at risk. The sooner you know your HIV status the better for your health, your partner, and future.
