Public Engagement Office

The SAMRC/Wits-Agincourt Unit has worked closely with its host communities for over 30 years. The Public Engagement Office (PEO) plays a vital role in building and maintaining strong relationships with the community, service providers, researchers, fieldworkers, and other key stakeholders. The PEO ensures that the Unit’s long-term, community-based surveillance work is supported by stable and trusting relationships that require ongoing nurturing.

The primary relationships are with the Community Development Forums (CDFs), indunas (local leaders), and the community at the study site. The fieldworkers, who are trained to sensitively conduct informed consent and address participant questions, serve as the main point of contact with the public.

The PEO team has strong connections with CDFs, indunas, ward councillors, and local municipal officers, ensuring smooth collaboration. Regular or special meetings are held with the CDF, and bi-annual meetings involving CDFs, indunas, the Community Advisory Board, and Community Development Workers are held at the Agincourt offices. Additional meetings with the entire Traditional Council can be called as needed.

The PEO advises on community entry post-ethics approval, facilitates feedback from community and service providers, addresses any ethical issues arising during fieldwork, and reports on community engagement and feedback.
